Charming, Hilarious, and Sometimes Impossible: The Art of Bullying—Hilariously Incorrect Edition

Ah, bullying. It's that time-honored tradition we all know so well. And by "know so well," we mean, of course, it's the charming, hilarious, and sometimes downright impossible way of putting others in their place! Picture it: You don't know the person, but hey, gossip has it that they're a thief! Isn't that just the juiciest tidbit you've heard in ages? In the spirit of political dirt-digging (because, really, running for office is a dirty business), it’s your duty to make sure everyone knows.

So here you are at your next networking event, casually sipping your drink and leaning in for maximum effect. You drop the bombshell: “You know what I heard? And you know what, the police have started that rumor! Can you believe it?!" Cue the dramatic pause for effect. People around you look at you with wide-eyed awe. You, my friend, have just elevated yourself to "person-who-knows-things" status. Everyone's hanging on your every word. Who cares that you’ve never met this person in your life? Or maybe you have casually met them once or twice before, but never at an event as a friend.  You’ve got the inside scoop!

Now, let’s go even further, because why not make this game even more charming? Let’s say you’ve heard some really juicy gossip. The kind that makes everyone at the next meeting stop what they're doing and listen. Maybe, just maybe, you’ve heard that this person has certain sexual predilections. I mean, where’s the fun in telling everyone about a random person’s love life in a calm, diplomatic way? Nope, we’re going big—let's jump right to the deep end of this fantasy.  And get this, you don't even know them, that is the best part!

“Did you hear? I’ve got the dirt! This person is a prostitute, pedophile, or john—you name it! Someone has to save the day and expose them, don’t you think? It's my duty to warn everyone! After all, isn't it important to let everyone know, so I can stand out as the hero who saved the world from this horribly nasty distasteful person?"

And, of course, by “saved,” you mean put someone down with a great deal of unnecessary shock and awe. Ah, the sweet scent of superiority in the air, and doesn’t it feel good? And what the heck, for good measure, say you heard it that the police have the inside scoop to give it more authenticity!  After all, it’s not like you have to actually know the person you’re gossiping about. No, no, no. You just need to get in on the buzz and feel like the big cheese.

Now, let’s get philosophical here for a second. Because really, what is gossip but a game of Telephone? Or, as it’s known in some circles, “Chinese Whispers”? It’s a simple, delightful game where you whisper a message from one person to another, and then compare the original message to the final one. Hilarity ensues as the message gets twisted and turned, impossibly altered from what it once was. But hold on! Guess what? Gossip doesn’t just stop with kids; it continues in adult meetings, groups, and networks where adults are often the first ones to start playing the game.

You know what’s really fun? Being the one who kicks off the game with a big, bold statement. You’ve got to make sure your little group is aware of all the supposed dirt about some poor soul who just happens to be the target of a rumor, right? Let’s say that person is totally unknowing, living their life, while you—the one with the inside info—are the hero in your own little secret society. The fun’s in the whispers. It’s way better than trying to engage in something boring like peaceful and loving behavior, or—gasp—not spreading gossip. What fun could there possibly be in that?

And now, for the big finale: Politically correct? Nah. Let’s not try to solve problems with kindness, compassion, or even basic decency. That’s way too dull. It’s way more exciting to spread rumors and make sure everyone knows just how much better you are than that poor soul who’s getting dragged through the gossip mill. It’s almost like a public service, really. After all, why actually get to know someone when it’s far more satisfying to sit back, whisper the rumors, and feel the world tremble at your feet?

Let’s be honest: Why would anyone want to be politically correct, peace-loving, and careful with their words when spreading gossip is just so much more fun? After all, the truth will always catch up with us, right? So, why not skip the whole "getting to know the person" part and just ride the gossip train straight to your next meeting? Don’t forget your dramatic flair, of course!

And thus, we’ve come full circle. If we’ve learned anything from this exercise in charming bullying (I mean, gossip), it’s that there’s nothing like a good rumor to make you feel better than everyone else. Isn't that just the best?

Remember, if you ever need a reminder: it’s always more fun to be hilariously incorrect about someone else’s misdeeds than to take the time to understand them.
