AWARD: A Prairie Wetland Awakening
🏆 RCE Saskatchewan's 18th Annual Awards for Achievement in Education for Sustainable Development https://saskrce.ca/recognition-event/
The Friends of the Saskatoon Afforestation Areas Inc. is honoured to celebrate the recognition of The Impact of Wetland Restoration Strategies in RSBBAA, a sustainability research and education initiative led by Sarah Diab and recognized through RCE Saskatchewan's 18th Annual Awards for Achievement in Education for Sustainable Development. This inspiring project demonstrates how academic research can evolve into community action, environmental stewardship, and lifelong learning. Centered within the Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area and the ecologically significant West Swale, the project explores science-based approaches to wetland restoration while engaging the public in biodiversity conservation and environmental sustainability.
The West Swale, a glacial spillway thousands of years old, serves as an important ecological corridor connecting prairie grasslands and the South Saskatchewan River watershed. Home to approximately sixty species at risk, these wetlands provide critical habitat while helping to filter water, reduce flood risk, and store carbon.
Through careful research, Sarah Diab developed restoration recommendations that prioritize ecological integrity and species protection. The project's Green Ribbon approach emphasizes native sedges and grasses, supporting wildlife while maintaining the open habitat required by sensitive species such as the Bank Swallow, Bobolink, and Horned Grebe. Beyond the research report, this project has become a powerful example of Education for Sustainable Development by transforming scientific findings into accessible learning opportunities through:
🌱 Educational Videos
🌱 Interactive Wetland Quizzes
🌱 Citizen Science Activities
🌱 Junior Steward's Quest Programs
🌱 Guided Tours and BioBlitz Events
🌱 Community Stewardship Initiatives
🌱 Environmental Storytelling and Outreach Featured educational resources include:
🎥 The Impact of Wetland Restoration Strategies
🎥 Water, Wildlife, and You: The Wetland Connection
🎥 Wetland Find the Differences Challenge
🎥 How Well Do You Really Know Wetlands? Take the Quiz!
🎥 Urban Wetlands Matter — Nature Lives Here Together, these resources create what has become known as the "Digital Swale"—an innovative educational ecosystem extending the reach of prairie wetland conservation into classrooms, homes, and communities around the world.
This project advances several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals:
🌎 SDG 4 – Quality Education
🌎 SDG 11 – Sustainable Cities and Communities
🌎 SDG 13 – Climate Action
🌎 SDG 15 – Life on Land
🌎 SDG 17 – Partnerships for the Goals
The project demonstrates that sustainability is not only about restoring ecosystems—it is about restoring relationships between people and the natural world. Special thanks to Sarah Diab, the Friends of the Saskatoon Afforestation Areas Inc., community volunteers, educators, citizen scientists, and partners whose dedication continues to strengthen environmental stewardship and ecological resilience.
As we celebrate this recognition, we invite you to learn more, explore the wetlands, participate in citizen science, and become part of the growing community of environmental stewards helping protect the West Swale for future generations. Every wetland protected. Every species observed. Every student inspired. Every community engaged. Together, we are building a more resilient future—one wetland at a time. 🌿 Friends of the Saskatoon Afforestation Areas Inc.
